Winter Fragrance
To have fragrance in the coldest part of the year adds another aspect of interest to this dull time of year.
They are best to be planted next to a door, garden path or driveway, so the scent can be carried to the areas where people are most likely to walk past.
Plants such as Mahonia and Sarcococca are evergreen and can add a backdrop colour at other times of the year. Whereas plants such as Viburnum x bodnantense Dawn and Lonicera fragrantissima flower on bare stems.
Mahonias have lovely bright yellow flowers aloft the spiky green foliage, the Lonicera (winter flowering honeysuckle) have cream flowers on long arching stems. The Sarcococca sp. are a compact shrub with white flowers followed by black berries (great for the birds). The Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ has pink flowers and V. Charles Lamont has pink buds opening to blush pink flowers.
