July is usually one of the hottest months of the year, so it’s all about watering and dead heading this month. Do your watering first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening to ensure that the moisture doesn’t evaporate so quickly, giving the most benefit to the plants.
For dead heading make sure you keep on top of it, to stop bedding plants and perennials from self-seeding. It will also help encourage further flowering. You can also cut back some perennials after their first round of flowers, to encourage new fuller growth.
It is also important to continue feeding plants during this period of active growth, it will help produce further flowering and maintain a strong and healthy plant. It is a good time to dead head roses to keep them looking tidy. During dead heading it is a good time to check for pests and diseases on your plants, the sooner these are detected the easier they are to treat.
To keep your lawn in a good condition mow once or twice a week and give them a boost with a liquid feed. If you’re planning on going away, don’t cut the grass too short as this encourages it to grow fast. Keep water topped up for wildlife birds and other wildlife need a drink during hot spells too.
We have our second cropping potatoes coming in near the end of this month, so start planting them at the end of July to give yourself new potatoes in time for Christmas. It’s time to start harvesting early crops like garlic, beetroot, peas, carrots, potatoes, salad leaves and tomatoes this month, you can also pick courgettes while they are young.
To boost your tomato crop, feed weekly with a diluted tomato feed. If the leaves are looking yellow, feed more regularly.

If the leaves are looking yellow, feed more regularly. You will also need to pick runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy. It is very important to water vegetable and fruit plants regularly in warm weather as they can dry out very quickly. Herbs can be picked and dried out to use later in the year – they can also be frozen and the defrosted when needed.
Have a great month in your garden!
