There’s nothing more satisfying than planting your own seeds and watching them grow. Never more so than when we grow our own food. It doesn’t matter what size your plot is, because you can grow food in even the smallest of places – even on a window sill! More people than ever are getting involved, saving money and experiencing the joy of tasting fresh fruit and vegetables they’ve grown themselves.

We thought you might like to know about a great little app that the lovely people at the Royal Horticultural Society have developed to help you do just this. The RHS Grow Your Own app has been designed to help you choose and grow fruit and vegetables as simply as possible. You can also record notes for each of your plants, and easily share the app across other devices, such as iPad.

The basic FREE app includes:

• 39 fruit and veg – the 20 most popular varieties of fruit and veg, plus they’ve added an extra 19 vegetables to help you get started.
• Access to expert RHS advice about your chosen fruit and veg with detailed growing, sowing and harvesting instructions as well as varieties that they recommend.
• Tools to help you choose vegetables and fruit for your garden based on your level of expertise, and your available space and time.
• Calendar function with alerts, to remind you what to do and when, based on your chosen fruit and veg in ‘My Garden’.

• Common problems you might encounter, with photos to help identify them, including pests and diseases and what to do about them.
• Location-aware frost warnings to help you protect your plants.
• Location-aware watering reminders and drought alerts.
• Content includes
  • the basic set of 20 plants: apple, blackcurrant, blueberry, cabbage, carrot, courgette, french bean, garlic, leek, lettuce, onion, pear, pepper, potato, radish, raspberry, runner bean, salad leaves, strawberry and tomato;
  • plus 19 more to get you started: aubergine, broccoli, celeriac, celery, chard, chicory, chilli pepper, Chinese broccoli, dried beans, fennel, globe artichoke, Jerusalem artichoke, pak choi, rocket, shallot, soya beans, swede, sweet potato, turnip.
